As we head into the summer months that may finally look much more familiar to us, we take comfort in the hope that things that once seemed impossible will actually become possible again. There is a path to returning to our versions of ‘normal’ that may not be as fast and direct as we had hoped for, but we are all looking forward to enjoying, even celebrating, things that we have not been able to do for a long time. Getting together with loved ones, sharing meals with friends, traveling and exploring, and even heading back to school and the office.

How we look back on the uncertain times that we collectively shared will differ, but we hope that the lessons learned are universal. Perseverance and the belief that time will bring the necessary changes that are needed. We want to apply this not only to our own lives, but those of everyone we share this planet with.

The recent news of the discovery of the mass grave at the Kamloops Indian Residential School has saddened us deeply. As a community whose love for children motivates us to do what we do, we continue to struggle to reconcile the terrible truth of how Indigenous children have been treated by Canada.

We want to honour the lives of not only these 215 children, but also the legacy of all Indigenous children and families who have been so horribly wronged. One way we are doing this is by donating to the Indian Residential School Survivor Society (IRSSS), whose mission is to provide physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual growth, development, and healing through culturally-based values and guiding principles for Survivors, Families, and Communities.

This city seems to go from winter right into the hot and hazy days of summer, with only a slight nod to spring along the way! If you and your children need to cool off after a long and sticky day, Toronto’s splash and spray pads are open and ready to help. The city keeps an active list of which ones are open and there is a map option to help if you are new to the city. Have fun and stay cool at the same time!
