FHMS Students at MMUN 2017

Several of our Upper Elementary students, teachers and families headed off to the Montessori Model United Nations Midwest Regional Conference from May 17th to 19th. The conference took place at Purdue University in Indiana. The goal of the MMUN is to inspire youth. MMUN students formulate, present, debate, and revise positions on current issues that are affecting people of the world. When they arrive at the MMUN Conference students transform themselves into UN Ambassadors and assume the rights and responsibilities of world leaders. Their imaginations propel them to collaboratively create resolutions to our world’s most pressing problems. MMUN encourages students to know that they can make a difference in the world. The students who attended have been preparing for months both in class and during their weekly MMUN afterschool club sessions. The extensive preparation has included researching the country of Senegal, writing position papers, preparing speeches and debate topics such as food security, sustainable development and children’s rights. As well, they have been learning about the history and function of the UN and its branches, along with UN policies, procedures and protocols.  This was an amazing experience for our Upper Elementary students and we are so proud of how hard they worked to prepare for this unique opportunity!
