Celebrating Love & Diversity: 5 Children’s Books We Love

At The Clover School, we believe every child deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and safe just as they are. During Pride Month—and all year long—we strive to nurture an inclusive learning environment that reflects the beautiful diversity of our world. One of the most powerful (and joyful!) ways we do this is through books.

Reading stories that celebrate diversity helps children build empathy, understand different perspectives, and embrace the many forms love and family can take.

Here are 5 children’s books we love that celebrate LGBTQ+ characters and themes—perfect for reading at home or in the classroom anytime of year. Each of these books can be purchased at Another Story Bookshop - a lovely bookshop in our community.

Pre-Primary Space 9

1. Julian Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love

When Julian sees three women dressed as mermaids on the subway, his imagination soars—he dreams of becoming a mermaid too. With rich, expressive illustrations, this story celebrates creativity, self-expression, and the beauty of being true to yourself.

2. And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson & Peter Parnell

Based on a true story, this book follows Roy and Silo, two male penguins at the Central Park Zoo who raise a chick named Tango together. A truly gentle and heartwarming story.

3. Red: A Crayon's Story by Michael Hall

Red is a crayon who’s labeled incorrectly—he’s actually blue inside. A clever and affirming metaphor for gender identity and the importance of being seen and understood for who you truly are.

4. Neither by Airlie Anderson

Set in a vibrant land of blue bunnies and yellow birds, Neither tells the story of a creature who is not quite either—and doesn’t fit into any of the existing boxes. When Neither is excluded, they discover a new place where uniqueness is celebrated.

5. Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer

This board book is a celebration of the many ways love shows up in everyday moments—making pancakes, sharing bath time, reading bedtime stories. With bright illustrations and simple, rhythmic text, it affirms that families come in all shapes and sizes.

In a Montessori environment, we teach children to love and care for themselves, others, and the wider world. These books support that idea by encouraging empathy, kindness, and a deeper understanding of the diversity that exists in our communities.

By offering children the language and stories that reflect many different lived experiences, we’re helping them grow into compassionate citizens of the world.
